About the Shetland Islands and the trip

The Shetland Islands consist of about 100 islands located about a hundred miles north of Scotland. The islands belong to Great Britain. Shetland was Zetland until the 1970s and has an incredibly strong Nordic heritage. It has been a home for the Vikings for thousands of years. The Shetland Islands are one of the best places in Europe to see birds and marine mammals. Even otters and whales are a common sight here, not to mention all the little Shetland ponies that roam freely on the islands.

Shetland's coastline stretches over 2 kilometers and in addition to all the wrecks that can be found here, it is estimated that there are coves, caves, bays and fjords, skerries, natural arches and underground passages. There is much to occupy the most passionate diving enthusiast for a lifetime.

The Shetland Islands offer some of the best diving in the UK, with an average visibility of 10 meters and up to 25 metres. There are plenty of wrecks that are deep enough to make them perfect dive sites. The wrecks are remarkably untouched by humans and there has not been much salvage. Life on the wreck is fantastic, with lumpfish, shoals of cod and the occasional kingfish peeking out of a hole. The marine life is enough to satisfy anyone. It is also very common to have nudibranchs on the wrecks, a dream for macro photographers!

Whales are also common here, with minke whales, killer whales, dolphins and porpoises being the most common. Shetland's abundance of underwater life is truly astonishing in its own right. It is one of the richest marine environments in the British Isles. Shetland offers a number of historic wrecks such as the 1700th century Queen of Sweden and World War I steamer Gwladmena to modern day trawlers.

From more modern times also the huge tanker Braer, a wreck from 1993 (pretty much completely broken up today). There are also sea cliffs and gorges teeming with color and life, as well as plenty of caves and underground tunnels.
