Land-based diving Komodo Alor in Indonesia offers a huge diversity of marine life and dive sites and is a couple of the world's most talked about diving destinations. Komodo national park has many small islands scattered over a large area. You can only imagine the wealth that lies beneath the surface of the sea here. As Komodo is both a land and marine national park, it is not allowed to live here. There are thus no resorts in the park area itself. However, there are opportunities to live nearby and thereby be able to enjoy the fantastic marine life if you don't want to go on one live board. Between Bali and Komodo, you will find a fantastic little diving paradise, Sumbawa Island, which lies west of Komodo Island. A real little gem that has not yet been discovered by so many diving travelers.
Sumbawa
The island is quite remote, and there is limited transport here. For this reason, we need to plan your trip in such a way that you don't risk missing your transfer to the island and the fantastic reefs that are here in the immediate area. You can also get to Komodo from here with day trips but it is quite far so expect full day trips.
There is also the possibility of living east of Komodo in Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores. You can also enjoy good diving here, but then almost all diving takes place inside the national park. No matter which variant you choose, you will have a fantastic experience as Komodo today has some of the world's finest coral reefs and a very rich marine life.
Alor
Alor is further east and is known for fabulous coral reefs with an incredible diversity of species. Here you will find great variety in diving and the area is known for whales, lumpfish, dolphins, hammerhead sharks and many other large marine life that pass here through the deep straits that run between the islands. Here you will also find very good macro diving. There are good accommodations at Alor, and occasional liveaboarders also go here sometimes.
