About land-based diving in East Timor

International diving probably hasn't really found its way here yet. Many may not even know where in the Far east East Timor is located. East of Indonesia with famous places like Komodo and Alor. Southwest of the aforementioned Papua Barat or West Papua and north of Australia. As an independent nation, Timor-Leste has not existed for that long, but diving and then land-based diving in Timor-Leste has started to take off. Here we are told about fantastic species richness and incredible reefs. A mixture of small and large can be experienced when you dive here. Even if there is no luxury to rub oneself in yet, it is probably a luxury to be here.

To get to Timor-Leste on a diving trip, you must first go via Bali, Jakarta or Singapore. There are also flights from Darwin in Australia. This means that you will have to spend the night on the way there. From the airport in East Timor and the capital Dili you then have a transfer to the north coast. Here, just over an hour north of the coast, there is a small island, Atauro, which has already been heard of. Here you will today find the world's most species-rich place for fish with close to 300 different species. The season here mainly runs from the end of March or the beginning of April until the end of November. After that, the rainy season starts and it is not recommended to go here and dive. It is windy and raining quite normally during that time.

In addition to the beautiful coral gardens and walls, there are many different fish here and you can also experience a rich macro life such as nudibranchs or nudibranchs, various crustaceans and funny pipe fish and frogfish. Larger animals such as hammerhead sharks, reef sharks, Mola mola (lump fish) and other large animals can surprise and also be seen, albeit in rare cases.
