About the diving around Zanzibar
- Well known Mneba Atoll
- Wreck diving off Stone Town
- Turtles, dolphins, shark, whale shark
The coral reefs that surround Zanzibar are home to over 400 different types of reef fish, turtles, dolphins and other marine life. If you are lucky, from July to October you can see humpback whales as they migrate to Madagascar. The inviting Indian Ocean, which has an average water temperature of 27 degrees and visibility of 10-40 metres. The adventure below the surface is mixed with the vibrant atmosphere on land and gives us a destination that is perfect for divers.
You can dive both from Matemwe and from Stone Town. Matemwe is closest to Mnemba atoll, known for all its fine diving spots. There are many boats that go out to the atoll daily, usually filled with snorkelers but also several diving boats. When and how you get to Mnemba depends entirely on the tide as the beaches are shallow on the east coast and the difference between high and low tide is as great as 5 metres. The tide determines whether you can go out by boat from the dive center or need to take a bus a bit north to get to the dive boat. Once out at Mnemba atoll, the diving offers great variety. Nice reefs, lots of fish and exciting macro diving. Octopuses, turtles and dolphins are common, as are whitetip reef sharks, but mostly during the summer months when the water is a few degrees colder. In January we have 28 degrees in the water and 32 in the air. During the spring, there is also the opportunity to see humpback whales that pass on the eastern side of the atoll. Whale sharks are also seen from time to time.
In Stone Town, thanks to the location, a completely different kind of diving is offered that is not at all affected by the tide. What mainly attracts divers to Stone town are the wrecks that are available to explore. "The Great Northern", which sank on New Year's Eve in 1902, lies at a depth of 12 m and is very popular with both snorkelers and divers. At 30 m there is also The Royal Navy Lighter, which has been lowered for diving. It is now covered in coral and large shoals of snappers thrive in its vicinity. There are also a couple of nice thriving reefs here on the east side.
Between dives you often get something very typical of Zanzibar - spiced tea. Warm, sweet tea seasoned with cinnamon and cardamom that warms well. Chapati, fresh fruit and pastries are served with this.
Things to think about during your trip to Zanzibar
If it is your first time in Africa, you will notice that the Africans do not take the same things as seriously as us Swedes. Above all, they see time in a different way and you will soon hear "pole pole", which means "no rush". Water and electricity don't always work like at home - it's easy to forget you're in Africa when everything looks so modern, but the power often goes out and the water disappears. So prepare for things to be different in Africa, which is one of the reasons we travel - to experience something different.
Zanzibar is 98% Muslim, which means yet another way of looking at life. The Muslim culture is strong, which also makes Zanzibar so special. When staying in the village or in Stone Town, we recommend that you, as a woman, cover your shoulders and knees. A scarf is good to bring for this. You, as a man, should also dress modestly. On the beach you can dress as you like, but note that it is forbidden to sunbathe topless.
