Amman is the country's capital, largest city, and most populous city in the country. The Jordanian economy is one of the smallest in the region. This has made it attractive to foreign investors due to its skilled and educated workforce.
The country has a very high literacy rate of over 95% and a strong commitment to education and a well-developed higher education system. Students from over 100 countries study at universities in Jordan annually. Jordan is a fantastic country with some really great food too.
Jordan is a major tourist destination and also attracts medical tourism with its well-developed health sector. The lack of natural resources, the large flow of refugees and regional unrest have severely hampered economic growth in Jordan. The tourism sector is considered a cornerstone of the economy.
The highest point is Jabal Umm al Dami, 1,854 m above sea level, while the lowest is the Dead Sea at −420 m, = the lowest land point on Earth. The 250 km long Jordan River, which gives the country its name, flows from the north and replenishes the Dead Sea, but where evaporation is greater than replenishment as most of the water in the river is drained for irrigation.
