Puerto Galera in the Philippines is beautifully situated by the sea and is surrounded by lushly vegetated mountains. It is considered one of the most beautiful but also most developed diving resort areas in the country. It started here with simple tourism. Locals accepted both local and foreign tourists as resident guests. Since then, Puerto Galera's tourism has flourished and developed. Over time, many hotels, resorts, inns, bars and restaurants have mushroomed in the area.

Upon arrival in the city of Batangas on the island of Luzon, board the waiting bankas (Filipino outrigger) or public ferry. They take you and other passengers across the surrounding sea and to the various resorts scattered along the coast. Jeepneys will then take you to the various indigenous villages and your accommodation.

It is possible to make several excursions on the days you do not dive and for families or you who do not dive. The villages are worth experiencing as the contrast from our own homes with modern conveniences is quite striking. It is possible to rent a motorcycle or a so-called Jeepney. Then a driver is also included and you can go off to discover waterfalls, jungles and monuments. You can also have a picnic and buy food from local shops. Try to discover the Filipino cuisine at some small local restaurant.

diving around Puerto Galera

Puerto Galera offers something for all levels of divers. Here there are large shoals of jacks, snappers, anthias, pressure fish, sea bass and barracuda. All together with living coral reefs and sometimes passing reef sharks. There are also turtles, moray eels and octopuses here. The area has a rich macrolife and crustaceans, flatworms and nudibranchs can be seen in large numbers. The corals attract marine life with exciting species such as pipe fish, frogfish and if you are lucky and have your eyes, even pygmy seahorses.

There are around 40 dive sites with depths varying between five and 40 metres.

Some of the famous dive sites

The Canyons are as it sounds canyons or ravines that make up this dive site full of action. It is a magnet for shoals of trevallies, sea bass, drummers, snappers and barracudas. Here there are large gorgonians and lots of soft corals that make it a colorful dive site. Keep an eye out for hibernating turtles and hiding octopuses.

West Escarceo is an extensive sloping reef that is home to healthy corals and an abundance of fish. Large schools of redandad stingrays that fill the blue sea. On the second reef you will often find many moray eels. If you then dive a little below 20 meters, you should look for bluespotted stingrays. They sometimes lie on the open sandy bottom.

Kilima Steps is a dive site that has several small plateaus. The depth is from five meters down to approximately 22 meters. Of course, you start at the deepest part and then slowly work your way up during your dive. Here you will see a number of different species. For example, soap fish, nudibranchs, barracuda, moray eels, dragon fish and adorable corals. If you like exciting topography, this dive site is a must.

Sinandigan Wall is a place for those who like to photograph macro or for those who are enthusiasts of nudity. This coral wall extends down to a depth of 30 meters. Where it turns into a more sloping reef. Look for exciting marine life among the colorful soft corals and resting turtles.

The temperature in the water varies between 23-30°C and we recommend a three to five mm wetsuit with boots. Visibility is normally around 18-20 meters but can go up to 40 meters.
