Diving in Khao Lak Similian Islands
Diving at the Similan Islands off Khao Lak is like stepping into an aquarium without walls. The sea itself offers you a display of colors and life. The water is often crystal clear and visibility can stretch far. This makes each dive a journey into a world where both small and large species coexist in an ecosystem that is as complex as it is beautiful.
At the vast coral gardens you will encounter butterflyfish, triggerfish, parrotfish and clownfish hiding in their anemones. Anthias and ladyfish fill the water with movement, and above the coral you can see turtles grazing peacefully. Moray eels emerge from the cracks in the granite boulders and various octopuses show off their colorful bodies. In deeper waters larger species such as barracuda, tuna and trevally patrol, and occasionally grey reef sharks appear in the current.
The Similan Islands are famous for their encounters with manta rays, which glide majestically over the reef. In the right season, whale sharks can also appear, which is one of the most sought-after experiences for divers in the area. Zebra sharks and nurse sharks are also regularly seen.
Richelieu Rock, reached by liveaboard from Khao Lak, is particularly famous for whale shark encounters and its abundance of life. Here you can witness huge schools of snappers and fusiliers moving in perfect synchrony, while tiny pygmy seahorses hide among gorgonians and nudibranchs or nudibranchs crawl over the corals in every imaginable color.
It is this mix of big game and macro life that makes the Similan Islands so unique. It's time to head home again after a magical holiday in Thailand and Khao Lak, transfer to Phuket and flight back to Scandinavia.
