Wildlife Calendar

Have you wondered when is the best time to travel to see some of the world's most amazing marine wildlife? Our calendar below contains information on when you have the best chance to see whales, dolphins, rays and many other wonderful diving experiences. 

January

• The whale watching season begins in Baja, Mexico and runs until the end of April. You can see Herring, Mink, Grind, Humpback and the Blue Whale, which is the largest mammal on our planet. There are few places in the world where these large animals can be seen so easily and so closely. Combine exciting diving in the Sea of ​​Cortez with whale watching at San Carlos, just a day trip away.
• Manta rays, hammerhead sharks and whale sharks can be seen in the Sea of ​​Cortez until the end of May.
• Hammerhead sharks are most commonly seen in Sudan from January through April.

February

• Humpback whales usually come to Kadavu in Fiji and stay until May.
• February and March are the best times if you want to see Bull and Tiger sharks in the waters around the Bahamas.

April

• Although they are seen all year round, the best time for rays is in April and May, around Bali and Indonesia.
• From April to September, leatherback turtles come to the beaches around Tobago to lay their eggs.

May 

• Whale sharks are often seen around the Galapagos Islands from May through August. During a liveaboard trip you will have the opportunity to experience these spectacular islands. Here, animal life has not yet learned to be shy of humans. 
• Turtles mate and lay their eggs around Palau from May to July. This means that there are larger turtles in the area.
• If you are on the east side of the Maldives between May and November, you have a great opportunity to experience rays and hammerhead sharks, which are also common in shallow water. 
• Larger Octopus can be seen in good numbers as they lay their eggs in the Brain Corals in the areas around the Ngerchong Channels in Palau.

June 

• June and August onwards is a good time to experience hammerhead sharks in Fiji and especially around Kadavu.
• You can also see humpback whales in June around the Galapagos and the coast off Mozambique.

July 

• From July to mid-September, leatherback turtles and loggerhead turtles can be found in Costa Rica's Tortuguero National Park. Both above and below the surface of the water, Costa Rica offers an exciting mix of eco and adventure experiences.
• July and October onwards, when the hammerhead sharks are most active around the Cocos, Malpelo and Galapagos Islands.
• During the period from mid-July to early October, it's mobula season around Princess Alice, Mako and Blue sharks you see around the Azores.

August 

• Manta and whale sharks are common in the Red Sea.
• Newfoundland on Canada's east coast is now home to Northern Cape, Minke, Humpback, and Herring whales throughout August and September.
• Minke whales are seen off the northern coast of Vanua Levu in Fiji.
• August and until the end of November is the best time to see great white sharks off the Guadalupe Islands and in the waters of Mexico.
• Mantas move through the Sudanese waters from August through October. 

September

• During the coral breeding season on Bonaire, you get the opportunity to see spectacular phenomena combined with really good land diving.
• Lumpfish or Sunfish, can be seen in the waters around Bali in Indonesia during the period September and November.

November

• Leatherback turtles are found from November through April in Tamarindo Bay, Costa Rica. Bull sharks are also seen in Costa Rica, on the Cocos and Malpelo islands during the same period.

December

• Large numbers of Green Sea Turtles come to the beaches around the Galapagos Islands to mate, just hang out and lay their eggs.
• Manta rays are found on the western side of the Maldives, through April.
• Greater numbers of eagle rays can be seen off Cozumel in Mexico until February.
• Mantas come together in large numbers, in the Mi'l Channel at Yap for the mating season which lasts until the end of April.
