Belize, exciting diving trip in the Caribbean

Belize is an exciting country and offers, in addition to fantastic and among the Caribbean's best diving, also exciting and interesting culture and nature on land. For those looking for a diving trip with a wonderful mix of diving, culture and experiences on land, this is a really good destination. The country was formerly called British Honduras and is located on the Caribbean coast between Mexico and Guatemala. The country changed its name as recently as 1973 and became independent in 1981. It is today the only country in the Caribbean/Central America that has English as its official language. 

In 2010, Belize became the first country in the world to ban bottom trawling. About 37% of the country's total area is today protected in some way to preserve nature. It is sometimes considered the world's most important area for protecting the majestic jaguar among other things. The country has a rich culture from the Mayan era and there are many fascinating temples and remains from that time. There is also a rich wildlife and flora on land and species such as the black orchid, mahogany, tapirs and toucans are today all national symbols.

The world's second largest barrier reef

Belize's coast is widely known for its stunning barrier reef, which is the second largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The reef stretches over 300 kilometers along the coast and is part of the reef that continues from Mexico down towards Honduras. In 1996, the reef was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Today there are over 100 species of coral documented here and over 500 species of fish. The reef is not particularly explored, which makes one think there are many more species. Most famous are places like the blue hole, a legendary dive site to dive at. Also the three atolls of Turneffe reefs, Glover's Reef and Lighthouse Reef offer fantastic Caribbean diving and diving trips here are very popular. During the spring, it is very common to see whale sharks along the coast.

Diving, snorkeling and freediving as well as fishing make tourism the country's biggest source of income after agriculture. Belize receives approximately one million tourists a year and has a population of just over half a million. You get the best diving with a liveaboard.

For those who want to travel to Belize and dive either with accommodation from land or do a liveaboard, you will need a number of nights on land before and after the trip. You will also have to make a stop on the way to Belize when you fly here, as connections from Scandinavia unfortunately make it impossible to go on the same day. Alternative stops can be, for example, Panama, Cancun in Mexico, Toronto in Canada or via the United States. We will of course arrange those nights for you as well.
