Thailand or the Kingdom of Thailand has been a well-known and popular destination for diving trips for many years for Scandinavians. The country is roughly 10% larger than Sweden in surface area and has close to 70 million inhabitants. The climate is highly variable depending on where in the country you are. The northern parts can be really cool with temperatures below 10°C degrees during winter and above 40°C degrees during summer. The southern parts have a more tropical climate and more even temperatures around 30°C all year round. The rainiest month in Thailand is normally September and the driest is usually between December and April/May.
Southern Thailand is for diving
The southern parts are the ones that are interesting for a diving trip. It is clearly one live board on the west coast of the Andaman Sea which will give you the best diving in Thailand. Here you will find places like Richelieu rock, Surin Islands, Koh Bon, Similan Island, Hin Daeng, Hin Muang which are all among the most famous and better places. A liveaboard is clearly preferable and they are offered all year round but to different locations.
There are also several well-known dive sites a little closer to Phuket, Krabi, Kao Lak, Phi Phi islands and Koh Lanta. To them it is easy to go on day trips from these places. Whale shark, manta rays, turtles and zebra sharks are perhaps the most popular species to search for. But there are also a lot of fish and invertebrates and macro life here, as well as wrecks. On the east coast, Koh Samui and Koh Tao and Koh Phangan are the most famous, where whale sharks and manta rays are sometimes seen at certain times of the year.
For those who want to go to Thailand and dive, a liveaboard is clearly preferable, but it is possible to live on land and make day trips to many places as well. Feel free to combine a few days with accommodation on land or why not make a stop for a couple of days in the vibrant world metropolis of Bangkok. The capital of Thailand is an experience and spices up your diving trip. Or fly via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and stop there.
Weather: The climate is warm and tropical, the temperature varies between 10-40 degrees depending on the season and where in the country you are. The rainy season usually lasts between May - November, when short but often heavy showers usually occur in the afternoon.
